Over many years there has been much confusion about considered one of Belle Isle's many institutions: the Casino. this is not a gambling casino, but instead uses the previous sense of the word, a spot for "public entertainments." This Casino has been used for this specific purpose since the original structure was built in the 1880s, serving as a gathering place for Detroiters for generations.
The first building to be called the Casino was built in 1887, as Belle Isle was being transformed into a municipal park. It was constructed to hold events, bazaars, and things of that nature, which its successor was created to do at the same time. The original building burnt down in early 1900s.
The original building was replaced in 1907 having a building produced by the firm of Van Leyen and Schilling. This building has continued to offer its function successfully for above 10 years now, and its particular future here seems to be secure well into the future, despite the problems that Belle Isle has had in recent years.
